Splint Therapy

Diagnosis

The first step towards treatment is a diagnosis. We will schedule a visit in our office to get to know you and your history with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues. We will feel around the joint area with physical palpations and look for signs of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). A variety of our technologies also help detect signs of TMD. A CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) scan gives a detailed internal view of what the joint looks like. A TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit gently relaxes and massages the TMJ and upper back with light electrical impulses. Please call our office with any questions. We would be happy to help you through the process of getting everything you need to begin TMJ splint therapy.

Treatment Options

For some people with mild or short-term symptoms, over the counter medication may help. For others, physical therapy can help correct misalignment and strengthen jaw muscles. Our solution is to make you a custom TMJ splint and work with you and physical therapy to resolve any issues.

At our clinic we specialize in oral appliances and have been working with TMJ disorders for over 5 years.

How They Work

The TMJ splint is very small insert that helps guide your teeth to a set position. The position that we set you at will be where your TMJ is most comfortable and where there is minimal pain. Splints are worn during the daytime or nighttime, depending on your unique situation. We work with physical therapy to help with any underlying symptoms and possible causes of the joint pain. Splints are very small, portable, and easy to care for.
